On march 13th the German newspaper “die Tageszeitung”, also known as “taz” organizes an information evening in Hamburg. Those invited are the former Director of the Hamburg based “Institut für Afrikakunde” - Prof. Rolf Hofmeier, the taz journalist Ulrike Herrmann, Ralph Peters who observed the elections and Yvonne Atieno. It will be moderated by Jan Kahlcke from taz at the “Kulturhaus”, Schulterblatt 73, starting at 8 o'clock at night.
Judging from the guests, it would be worth to attend if you live in Hamburg. But the newspaper is running the even under the title: Kenia - Blutbad im Urlaubsparadies (Kenya – Bloodbath in the vacation paradise)! How can someone like Prof. Hofmeier put his respected name under such a cheap tabloid title? The title makes it impossible to recommend the event.
« Background information on the political crisis in Kenya – Kenyans at Risk of Long-Term Food Insecurity and Malnutrition »
So why do you advertise an event and then recommend not to go there?

Dear Lisa,
I think that Prof. Hofmeier will provide a good analyses of the current Kenyan crisis.
But I also do not appreciate this tabloid stile: The title uses to clichés of Africa. First the “vacation paradise”. Is it really all that matters to the rest of the world, that your vacation was spoiled? And than the “bloodbath”. Is Kenya the latest horror motion picture? Is that all that reaches Europe from the Kenyan crisis?
This is why I personally would not attend, since I do not think that it is worth, if the people that come up with such a title, are moderating the talk.
But everyone should think for themselves and come to their own conclusion.
It was also send around by email by respected members of the Hamburg’s Kenyan Community, therefore there might be the right people asking the right questions.
Maybe someone who attends can tell here later on how it was.

“Kenia – Blutbad im Urlaubsparadies” is not only a cliché, it is racism!

…too bad if there is no bloodbath anymore. No one will show up, since this is a discussion on violence not on peace and reconsiliation. Nothing for bloodthursty newsmakers.
